Camponotus arboreus live primarily in trees, building their nests in dead wood or crevices in trunks, especially in bromeliaceae, which gives them a remarkable adaptation to arboreal environments. These ants are generally large, and their diet is omnivorous, including aphid honeydew and other insects.
Raising Camponotus arboreus can be a fascinating experience, but it requires patience and careful preparation.
Here are some basic tips:
1. Habitat: These ants prefer an arboreal environment. A terrarium with branches and pieces of dead wood is ideal. Ensure the habitat is well ventilated and secure to prevent escapes.
2. Temperature and Humidity: Maintain a temperature between 20-28°C and a high relative humidity, lightly misting the terrarium if necessary.
3. Diet: They feed on honeydew (or a sugar solution) and insects such as flies or crickets. Make sure to provide them with a varied diet.
4. Observation and Care: Avoid disturbing the colony too often. Observe them discreetly to avoid stressing the ants.
